As you drive into Halifax Dean Clough, formally the world's largest Victorian Carpet Mill, fills the skyline. This is Halifax's colossal centre for the arts. Dean Clough accommodates eight exhibition spaces with a commitment to exhibit contemporary art and design. Watch out for the photography of Martin Parr, notably and there's a designated Henry Moore Foundation Studio which hosts changing exhibitions, a restaurant, cafe bar and delicatessen, a book and design shop and the 20th Century Design Collection.
Halifax seems to house more Victorian architecture than any town or city in the UK. For that reason alone it is worth a visit - just strolling around it's town centre taking in the decor of the market entrance, the Victoria Theatre or the famous Halifax Town Hall. The town hall was designed by Sir Charles Barry, the designer of the Houses of Parliament and you can see similarities in the two in the many Victorian flourishes.
The Wainhouse Tower in the King Cross area is distinct in the Halifax skyline. This folly was originally intended as a chimney channelling smoke from a nearby dyehouse. Designed by Isaac Booth the chimney has a spiral staircase leading upto the balcony. The Wainhouse Tower became locally known as the 'Tower of Spite' resulting from a feud between Sir Henry Edwards and Victorian Industrialist John Edward Wainhouse. Edwards had boasted that no house in the area could achieve a view of his private grounds, so Wainhouse put a observatory on the top of the tower.
